[March 2024.]

Marimba Concertos.” Anders KOPPEL: Concerto No. 1 for Marimba and Orchestra (1995)1; Concerto No. 2 for Marimba and String Orchestra (2000)2; Concerto No. 3 for Marimba and Orchestra, “Linzer” (2002; rev. 2003)3; Concerto No. 4 for Marimba and Orchestra, “In memory of things transient” (2006)4; P.S. to a Concerto (1995)5. Marianna Bednarska1,2,3,4,5 (marimba), Aalborg Symphony Orchestra1,2,3,4, Henrik Vagn Cristensen1,2,3,4 (cond.). Dacapo 6.220595 (1 SACD) (www.dacapo-records.dk).

Here are four marimba concertos, sparkling and suave, slightly jazzy, like Gershwin’s grandchildren. Bednarska executes with precision. YES.

Chess Show (Other Memories of John Cage).” OPENING PERFORMANCE ORCHESTRA: Chess Show (two vers.: 2017 and 2021). Opening Performance Orchestra, Reinhold Friedl (pno, toy piano, etc.), Miroslav Beinhauer (pno). Neos 12113-14 (2 CDs) (www.neos-music.com).

An excuse for a slow-motion improv schmear, leveraging Cage’s materials. At least it’s calming. Cage would probably have disowned it. MAYBE.

Scarlet Songs.” Mirela IVIČEVIĆ: CASE WHITE (2018)1; The F SonG (2014/16)2; Baby Magnify / Lilith’s New Toy (2017)3; Sweet Dreams (2019)4; CASE BLACK (2016)5. Klangforum Wien1,4, The Black Page Orchestra2,3,5, Ilan Volkov1, Juan Martin Miceli2,3, Bas Wiegers4, Vasilis Tsiatsianis5 (cond.). Kairos 0015123KAI (1 CD) (www.kairos-music.com).

Are our bored screams an intended effect? Are we done yet with the noise and gestures of yesterday, the inside jokes, the coy allusions? NO.

Ephemera.” Jesse JONES: Abraxas (2013)1; Ephemera (2014)2; Harmonies poétiques et religieuses (2011)3; Unisono (2011)4; The Mystery Which Binds Me Still (2016)5. Sharon Harms3,5 (sop), Xak Bjerken2,4 (pno), Joseph Eller4 (clar), Nicholas DiEugenio4 (vln), Kenneth Meyer5 (guit), Argento Chamber Ensemble1, ensemble recherche3, Michel Galante1 (cond.). Innova 980 (1 CD) (www.innova.mu).

Except perhaps for the title piece, plenty of surprises and elegance, which is after all the whole reason we listen to things isn’t it? YES.

Felix WOYRSCH: Symphony No. 4 in F major, Op. 71 (1930); Symphony No. 5 in D major, Op. 75 (1935). Garden Scene from Goethe’s Faust (1941-44?). NDR Radiophilharmonie, Thomas Dorsch (cond.). cpo 555 063-2 (1 CD) (www.cpo.de).

Two symphonies reveal Woyrsch (1860-1944) blending Bruckner’s harmonies with Strauss’ agility. The Fourth is frisky. No. 5 is drier. MAYBE.

Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Op. 30 (1882-83). Sergei PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16 (1912-13). Alexander TSFASMAN: Jazz Suite (1945). Zlata Chochieva (pno). BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Karl-Heinz Steffens (cond.). Naïve V8848 (1 CD) (www.naiverecords.com).

Chochieva provides sparkle and varied essences, but with such stiff accompaniment, what was obscure and unfamiliar remains decidedly so. NO.
