Estonia Singing Competition

[December 2002.]

On May 26-30, 2003, the third Klaudia Taev International Competition for Young Singers will take place in the Estonian city of Pärnu. The competition is open to singers born after June 1, 1967 who are active or are studying in the field of opera / classical singing.

Registration has already opened and the application deadline is March 17, 2003.

From the applicants registered on time, 24 candidates will be chosen. The competition will be held in three parts, with up to six contestants in the third and final round.

First prize is 7000 EUR and includes engagements with the Estonian National Opera and one concert with the 21st Century Orchestra. Second prize is 3500 EUR, and third is 1500 EUR. All three winners may be offered parts in the opera production held during the fourth Klaudia Taev Competition in May 2005.

Giuseppe Verdi’s Rigoletto is scheduled for this year and the winner of the last competition, Anna Samuil of Russia, will perform the rôle of Gilda.

Klaudia Taev was a legendary Pärnu vocal teacher. The idea for the competition started with the poet and singer Toomas Kuter, whose aim was to commemorate her life and work. In 1996 the first competition for young singers occurred. The second competition (2001) went international. Pärnu is a beautiful Estonian summer resort on the Baltic, and a memorable setting for the event.
